Today is a very stressful and fast paced time, even children need to take a time out from today’s hectic lifestyle. Instead of your child becoming a couch potato watching T.V. or listening to an Mp3 player, try to interest them in an alternative. A hobby could open up a new dimension to their life.

A hobby is an activity or pastime that the child would engage in during his spare time. Find out what they are interested in and encourage that activity.

Try not to involve them in activities that they are not interested in. One example would be if you were to sign a child up for football. That individual may not resist playing football but they are not excited about it either.

There are different hobbies. One example is scrabble, it is a great way to pass the time and it can be a great learning experience also. There are many other games as well such as checkers, chess, bridge, gin, rummy and backgammon.

Another hobby is collecting, a person can collect almost anything. key chain, lunchbox, autographs, stamps, trading cards, comic books, postcards, spoons or coin collecting. If a person spends enough time learning what is valuable and what is not, a great income can be earned from this hobby.

Some hobbies are a blend of collecting and education. A two examples are rock and mineral, shell and arrowhead collecting. Gardening and composting are considered both educational and physical.

Hobbies are usually excellent learning tools. A child who has a particular hobby may become an expert. It is a great opportunity to learn organizational skills through setting up a collection. Planning the next step of their chosen hobby will be a great experience and a learning opportunity.

There are few negatives to having a hobby but there are a few. The child may become obsessed to the point that everything else takes a backseat. It is important for the parent to keep their child focused on what is important such as school work and household chores and not allow them to become fixated on their new hobby.
