How Hybrid Cars Work: A Brief Glimpse of the Car of the Future

A great many of us are trading in conventional primarily fuel burning clunkers and purchasing a new kind of car that stands to cut your fuel bill in half. These new line of cars are labeled as hybrid cars. Add to that the fact that hybrid vehicles release less greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere than most cars currently on the road. That means, the more of us there are driving hybrid cars, everyone will be better off.

Now that you know about hybrid cars you probably want to know how one works. Here’s an overview of the hybrid cars. We will not be looking at Hybrid car history in this article.

In a nutshell, hybrids run on both gas and electric power sources to power the car. For starters, it’s important to know that the electric part of the engine is only working while the car is idling and the gasoline engine is automatically shut off. That means that the car is purely running on electricity. This helps to explain why you can hardly hear a hybrid while it’s idling in a driveway or at an intersection. This will also explain why hybrids are so fuel efficient. Once you step on the accelerator, the gas engine powers back on. There are also hybrid cars that are able to run on electric power primarily for longer periods. This is very useful who don’t venture too far from home with their cars. You may not need to gas up the car for a considerable period of time.

Still, in any hybrid, long trips will require fuel. You can even say that the gasoline will be used for back up power in case the battery is discharged. There’s nothing more to it– a battery that stores energy, a generator, a combustion engine, a gas tank, and a motor that runs on electricity. Now you know why it is called a ‘Hybrid’.

Now that you know more about hybrids, you probably also have a better handle as to why you should be driving one. Owning the car will not only save you considerable amounts of money on fuel, but it will also allow you to do even more to cut down on global warming.
